Abu Dhabi (UAE) Oct 7: Emotional tributes are pouring in for the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum on his 30th death anniversary. The beloved leader's son, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took to social media to post a heartfelt poem.
Sheikh Mohammed recalled the late Dubai Ruler as a "man of few words and lot of thinking". Sheikh Rashid's day began before that of his people, "he loved Dubai and was faithful to the Union", Sheikh Mohammed wrote.
"His vision was as deep as the sea. He loved his wife Latifa. He left quietly after filling the world with his deeds," the poem read.
Known as the father of Dubai and architect of a modern city, Sheikh Rashid ruled Dubai from 1958 until his death in 1990. He played a pivotal role along with late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in the UAE's union in 1971. Known for his far-sightedness and statesmanship, he was credited with transforming Dubai into a world-class metropolis by opening the Dubai International Airport in 1960; Port Rashid in 1972; Dubai World Trade Centre in 1978; and Jebel Ali Port in 1979.
Sheikh Mohammed changed his Twitter profile photo to that of his father, a gesture replicated by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai; Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai; Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council; and Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council.
They all posted tributes to the late Sheikh Rashid on their Twitter accounts, which included videos of the leader inaugurating groundbreaking projects in Dubai.
"In remembrance of the 30th anniversary of the passing of one of the greatest leaders, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum," Sheikh Hamdan tweeted. "A leader that created an inspiring vision for Dubai and its people. His achievements and efforts live on in our hearts and therefore shall never be forgotten."
Sheikh Mansoor said: "On the 30th anniversary of his passing, we recall a record of the accomplishments and generosity of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum ... His passion for work and achievement will remain a fundamental pillar for Dubai."
Sheikha Manal said the beloved leader was being "missed in all our successes and achievements". "We see you in all our progress and developments. A man of true wisdom, success, and a loving father. That is how you shall always be remembered in Dubai, the UAE and to us all."
