Naypyitaw (Myanmar) Sept 19: The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) has filed defamation charges against two Facebook users for making fun of Mandalay Chief Minister U Zaw Myint Maung.
U Ponnya Swe, a member of the regional NLD information team, warned that the party will prosecute those who aggressively mislead people, especially on social media.
He said he filed the complaint on behalf of U Zaw Myint Maung at a police station in Chan Mya Tharzi township on Monday under section 66(d) of the Telecommunications Law.
U Zaw Myint Maung said he hadn't seen the Facebook page "We Love Dauk Zaw Group," which showed memes that made fun of him.
"I haven't read them, but they can't write or say whatever they want under title of 'love,'" he told reporters. "I have rights too, and the freedom to live."
U Zaw Myint Maung is president of the NLD executive committee.
The "We Love Dauk Zaw Group" page has over 1000 members. It shows images of the chief minister and humorous texts.
There is also a Facebook group entitled "We Love Kwee Phyo," which makes fun of Yangon Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, but the Yangon leader has taken no action against the page.
